More aggressive, Ochoa went on the offensive and landed strong punches to the midsection, as well as good calf kicks. He even managed to take his opponent down after blocking a high kick in the opening seconds of the fight. Visibly cornered, Carpenter attempted a takedown, but was thwarted by the Chute Boxe fighter, who then began working good jabs to the face and front kicks. Despite landing good blows to the head, the American clearly felt the impact more on his body. Charles' teammate secured a knockdown with an uppercut to the chin after a better exchange of blows against the cage, and showed great composure while defending against a heel counter from his opponent. At the end of the first five minutes, Carpenter returned to his corner with a nosebleed.
Ochoa returned even more aggressively in the second round, cornering his rival and punishing Carpenter's midsection with punches and knees. In a quick movement, the American attempted a takedown, transitioned to Carpenter's back, and went for a leg lock after the Peruvian defended. The two returned to fighting on their feet, with Ochoa regaining control and easily absorbing any counter-attacks from his opponent. In the final 90 seconds, he began hammering his opponent's legs with calf kicks and occasionally throwing long combinations against the cage. At this point, he even landed an effective spinning elbow to his opponent's face, as well as a head kick.
Aware of his disadvantage, Carpenter tried to change the course of the fight by being more aggressive and engaging in more open exchanges. He capitalized on a flying knee attempt to take Ochoa to the ground, gain half-guard, pass the guard, and lose the position after attempting to take his back. Back on his feet, Jose landed quick combinations of punches that shook the American's head. With the exception of a few knees to the midsection and a quick head kick, Carpenter struggled to inflict real damage on the Latino.
Thus, at the end of the 15-minute fight, all the judges scored it 30-27 in favor of Ochoa. In the post-fight interview inside the octagon with Joe Rogan, he took the opportunity to propose to the mother of his daughter, who watched everything from Brazil.
