Jean Silva caused a stir by defeating Arnold Allen and 'surfing' his way to the top of the featherweight division at UFC 324, held last Saturday (24). Despite the impact of the performance, there is still no guarantee that the Brazilian, known as "Nerd", will receive an immediate chance to fight for the 65,7 kg belt. This scenario is due to statements by Alexander Volkanovski , the current champion of the category, who defends the title at UFC 325, scheduled for next Saturday (31), and indicated the existence of internal conversations about a possible duel to define the next challenger — without Jean's participation.
During an appearance on the Honey Badger Podcast, Volkanovski revealed that he had heard rumors that the UFC was planning a fight between Movsar Evloev and Lerone Murphy . According to the champion, the idea would make sense because it would allow one of the athletes to be further promoted, resulting in a clear and undefeated challenger to face him in the future.
“I think that’s already happening (defining the next challenger). I heard some rumors (Evloev vs. Murphy). But I think that’s what they’re doing, and it makes sense, because that way they can build him up even more, and then you have a clear guy who is undefeated,” said Volkanovski.
Alexander Volkanovski faces Diego Lopes at UFC 325
Before even thinking about a potential next challenger for the belt, Alexander Volkanovski has an immediate commitment ahead of him. The Australian champion faces Diego Lopes in the main event of UFC 325, in a highly anticipated rematch. Confident, the Brazilian claims to know exactly what it takes to leave the octagon with his arm raised and win the title.
