After years of reigning in the UFC's middleweight division (up to 83,9 kg), Anderson Silva was paired with Chris Weidman for a duel that seemed like mere formality for the Brazilian. However, the American scored a knockout that ended the Spider's 16-fight UFC winning streak.
In the immediate rematch at UFC 168, Weidman won again, this time after Anderson Silva to fracture his shin while kicking, and have the blow blocked by the American.
Before being confirmed to face Tyron woodley, Anderson Silva had a new duel scheduled against Chris Weidman, with whom he would have his trilogy fight. However, the American suffered an injury and ended up being removed from the fight, opening up space for a change of opponent.
