Shavkat Rakhmonov offered his own explanation for Islam Makhachev 's resistance to allowing him to challenge for the UFC belt. Although the newly crowned welterweight champion (up to 77 kg) justified his refusal by citing the Kazakh's inactivity, the 'bogeyman' sees the situation differently.
When commenting on the matter in an interview with Ariel Helwani, Rakhmonov stated that Makhachev would be looking for a more suitable opponent, avoiding anyone who represents a greater technical risk. The Kazakh fighter reinforced that his undefeated record is no accident and that he is ready to accept any decision from the UFC.
“Perhaps Islam is looking for a more suitable, more convenient opponent. I believe I am the most inconvenient and most difficult opponent for him in the category. I am undefeated for a reason… Whatever the UFC’s decision, I believe he will accept it. I’m not going to miss this opportunity,” said Rakhmonov.

Undefeated with 19 career wins, Shavkat Rakhmonov last stepped into the octagon in December 2024 at UFC 310 , when he defeated Ian Garry by unanimous decision. At the time, the Kazakh fighter was scheduled to face Belal Muhammad for the title, but the Palestinian withdrew from the fight due to injury.
With the expectation of having the title fight rescheduled, it was Rakhmonov's turn to suffer a knee injury and temporarily interrupt his career for recovery. During his absence, the 'bogeyman' saw the belt pass from Belal to Jack Della Maddalena and, later, to Islam Makhachev , without even having the chance to compete in the long-awaited title fight.

Besides Shavkat Rakhmonov , Islam Makhachev has a long line of challengers waiting for a title opportunity. Among the top names are prospects Michael Morales , Carlos Prates , and Ian Garry , as well as the veteran and the Russian's favorite, Kamaru Usman . Also in contention is Ilia Topuria , the lightweight champion (up to 70,3 kg), who is pursuing a super fight against the Dagestani fighter.
