After the victory of Alex Poatán about Magomed Ankalayev No. UFC 320, which guaranteed the Brazilian the recapture of the light heavyweight belt (up to 93kg), the former champion and commentator Daniel Cormier declared that a victory for the star over Jon Jones in the heavyweight division (up to 120,2 kg) could elevate him to the status of best fighter in history.

“If he can win Jon Jones at heavyweight, Alex would solidify himself practically above everyone,” Cormier said on his YouTube channel.

The Brazilian has already shown interest in facing Jon Jones at a symbolic White House event scheduled for June 2026. However, out of respect for the recent death of Jones' brother, Poatan chose not to make the formal call publicly.

Despite Poatan's desire, obstacles remain. UFC president Dana White initially ruled out the possibility of a superfight, while Jones expressed hesitation after already announcing his retirement. The former light heavyweight champion, however, isn't closing the door on a potential return should a worthy challenge arise.
