The UFC issued an internal safety warning to its athletes, coaches and staff about the risk of methanol contamination in alcoholic beverages in Brazil, on the eve of the event scheduled for Rio de Janeiro next Saturday (11) which features Charles do Bronx vs Mateusz Gamrot in the main fight. The measure was adopted after the advancement of a public health crisis that has already caused hundreds of cases and deaths from poisoning in various regions of the country.
According to a statement obtained by MMA Fighting and confirmed by SUPER LUTAS , the organization urged caution in the consumption of alcoholic beverages, especially distilled spirits, in order to warn that methanol contamination is difficult to detect. The UFC reinforced the importance of everyone following the guidelines of local health authorities and using common sense during their stay in the country.

The alert was issued after the Ministry of Health confirmed cases of mass poisoning caused by adulterated beverages. According to authorities, methanol, a highly toxic industrial chemical, has been illegally used in the production of alcoholic beverages, especially cachaça and distilled spirits, as a way to lower costs.
In small amounts, methanol can cause blindness, severe neurological damage, and even death. The Rio de Janeiro State Health Department had also issued a statement to the state's 92 city halls, reinforcing the need for inspections in bars, restaurants, and tourist attractions.
With UFC Rio scheduled for the coming days, the organization has decided to redouble its precautions and provide guidance to fighters and staff. This precaution is considered part of the organization's safety protocol, which typically adapts its measures to the context of each country where it hosts events.
