Merab Dvalishvili began the fight using feints and changing levels to dominate the center of the octagon, while Cory Sandhagen looked for counterattacks. The Georgian quickly gained the upper hand with takedowns, and even when the American got back to his feet, he continued to press, landing sequences of strikes that kept Sandhagen on the defensive throughout the fight.
Merab remained relentless, repeatedly taking Sandhagen down and landing impressive takedowns, including a judo takedown that sent his opponent tumbling headfirst to the ground. In the final round, the champion continued to advance and dominate, leaving no room for a comeback. In the end, Dvalishvili retained the belt by unanimous decision, totaling 20 takedowns in the fight and 117 in his career, breaking the organization's record.
