Currently ranked number one in the UFC lightweight division (up to 70,3kg), Arman Tsarukyan has been making waves in his quest for a coveted title shot. Despite his attempts, the fighter is being penalized by Dana White for the sudden cancellation, just before UFC 311 , where he was scheduled to face Islam Makhachev.
Keeping an eye on the situation, Cormier decided to take a stand and did not hesitate to defend the Armenian's right to be the next challenger for Ilia Topuria , who is currently the undisputed champion of the category.

“I’m not saying Arman is the kind of guy who always messes up and doesn’t make weight or fight. That happened once. He shouldn’t be judged solely on that one time, especially after making weight and preparing to fight as a reserve fighter in the last fight. It should be Arman vs. Ilia, and I think there’s no doubt about that, but I think the problem with that is the last memory of (Topuria) and Paddy Pimblett in the octagon,” Cormier stated on the show 'Good Guy/Bad Guy'.
The moment Cormier refers to was when Topuria and Pimblett faced off in the octagon after the Spanish-Georgian fighter won the title at UFC 317. Joe Rogan, a commentator for the organization, invited the Englishman to perform the action, driving the crowd at the T-Mobile Arena wild. At the time, Dana White seemed dissatisfied with the action and dodged the question of whether 'Baddy' would actually be the next challenger.
