McGregor's historic rival mentions Ilia Topuria and plans return to the UFC: 'He's too small for me'

Away from the action for just over a year, Nate Diaz seems to be considering a return to the spotlight. The controversial welterweight (up to 77kg) left the UFC in 2022 after defeating Tony Ferguson , and since then has ventured into boxing, facing names like Jake Paul and Jorge Masvidal . However, the veteran already has a plan to return to the Ultimate Fighting Championship.

During an appearance on the 'King of Violence' podcast, Diaz expressed interest in completing his trilogy against Conor McGregor in a possible return to the octagon. For the American, the Irishman remains the most relevant name for a rematch, even with his long period of inactivity.

“If I could fight anyone right now, I would fight Conor McGregor . There’s nobody else to fight right now. I wish he would come back and impress me first. Not that he needs to, but it would be good to see him back. Everyone hates him,” said Nate Diaz.

In addition to McGregor, the American praised Ilia Topuria and highlighted the good performance of the lightweight champion (up to 70 kg), although he considers him physically too small to face him.

“Little Ilia Topuria , he’s doing a good job. He’s a little small for me, but I think those two are the best fighters,” Diaz continued.

Nate Diaz eyes superfights in boxing

Outside of MMA, Diaz mentioned plans in boxing, citing Canelo Álvarez and Terence Crawford as possible opponents in a future challenge in the noble art.

"And in the boxing department, obviously Canelo or Crawford... With all due respect. So that's my plan," concluded the veteran.

After knocking out José Aldo in 2015 and winning the featherweight title (up to 65,7kg), Conor McGregor decided to move up to lightweight in pursuit of a title in a second division. The Irishman was scheduled to face Rafael dos Anjos , then champion of the category, in a historic super fight. However, an injury forced the Brazilian to withdraw from the fight.

With only 15 days' notice, Nate Diaz was called in to replace Dos Anjos and face McGregor. Despite facing difficulties in the first round, the American surprised everyone by submitting the Irishman with a rear-naked choke in the second round. In the rematch, held months later, McGregor dominated the stand-up fight and won by unanimous decision, evening the score between the rivals.
