According to Sonnen, Volkanovski showed signs of slowing down in the duel against the Brazilian even with the victory and regaining the title.
“I saw moments of Volk where he looked old. I saw moments of Volk where he was hit and hurt by blows that, at a certain point, would never have hit him,” said the former fighter, who fought for the middleweight (up to 83,9 kg) and light heavyweight (up to 93 kg) belts.

When talking about the choice of the duel with the Brazilian, the former fighter questioned the legitimacy of a confrontation with Diego lopes, in addition to citing the absence of Ilia Topuria as a problem and praise Yair Rodriguez as the next challenger.
“I want to make sure I give a fair account of Volk, who is the greatest fighter of all time. But did he fight the right opponent? We know the number one guy (Ilia Topuria) wasn't there; he left, so who was the right guy? I can't go through this fight, clamoring to see Volk fight anyone. You hear that and you think, "Chael, you're being really rude." So let me point the finger at you, leave a comment: who are you dying to see him fight? That's where I like the idea of seeing him against Yair Rodriguez”He concluded.
