UFC commentator praises Jon Jones for 'smartest' decision that fans didn't forgive

For many, Jon Jones is arguably the UFC's GOAT. He spent years at the top of the light heavyweight division (up to 93 kg) until the American moved to the heavyweight division (up to 120,2 kg), where he has also remained on the throne since 2023. For the organization's commentator, Joe Rogan, who hosts one of the biggest podcasts in the world, the fact that 'Bones' always remains in the spotlight is because he has a quality above the average of other fighters: intelligence.

To illustrate his thoughts on the greatest of all time, Joe Rogan recalled in a recent episode of his podcast a fact that many fans still haven't forgiven Jones for.

UFC 151: Jones vs. Henderson, scheduled to take place on September 1, 2012, was set to feature Bones defending his light heavyweight title against the California fighter. However, Henderson suffered an injury and Chael Sonnen was sought as a last-minute replacement for the bout. Result: Jones declined to face his new opponent with just eight days' notice and the UFC had its first event canceled in history.

"Jon Jones is the smartest. They changed opponents. 'F— you, the fight is over,'" Rogan said on his podcast.

Sonnen wasn't the problem at hand. So much so that, a year after the cancellation of UFC 151, the two fighters faced each other with 'Bones' crushing the loudmouth in the first round. For Rogan, the issue is that Jones doesn't take risks and likes to do things the right way. That would be the key to his success that has lasted for so many years.

“If you try to call Jon Jones for a last-minute fight on five days’ notice, he’s going to tell you to f—k off,” Rogan concluded.

the last fight of Jon Jones it was on UFC 309, in November of last year, when he brutalized Stipe Miocic with a spinning kick in New York. Since then, the organization's GOAT has been under intense pursuit from the interim heavyweight champion, Tom aspinall, who wants a title unification fight against 'Bones'.

Dana White has assured that the fight will take place in 2025, but Jones has been accused to dodge of the fight due to an extensive list of demands to step into the octagon against Aspinall.

All that's left for fans (and Tom) to do is hope for an outcome as soon as possible.
