Justin gaethje publicly expressed the desire to face Islam makhachev in June and expressed concern about the Russian's possible move to the UFC's welterweight category (up to 77 kg). In an interview with the channel 'TheSchmo', the American said he was ready to fight for the lightweight belt (up to 70,3 kg) and highlighted that he is 'at the end of the journey' in his career.
“I hope that’s not the case. I’m ready to fight in June. Makhachev said he wants to fight in June. I hope to get that call. I’m not at the beginning of the journey anymore — it’s coming to the end,” Gaethje said in a conversation with TheSchmo.

Despite speculation about a possible weight class change, there is no official confirmation that Makhachev will leave the lightweight division anytime soon. The Russian, who inherited the legacy of Khabib Nurmagomedov, has already expressed ambition to win a second title in another division, but has avoided setting deadlines.
The welterweight category appears as a natural option, but the path may be blocked by Belal Muhammad |, current belt holder and former training partner of the champion. Gaethje, in turn, has tough competition from Charles of the Bronx e Ilia Topuria, who are also interested in a fight against Islam.
