Since debuting in the organization, Diego lopes, born in Brazil, did not hide his closeness to Mexico and defended the country's flag at every opportunity. However, it seems that he is not unanimous among Mexicans themselves — especially for Yair Rodriguez.
In a press conference at the 'Media Day' of UFC 314, Yair expressed that, despite living in the United States and being grateful for the opportunities he has received, he continues to consider himself Mexican and is proud of his nationality. Because of this, he stated that he does not agree with Diego lopes represent Mexico, suggesting that Brazilians do not have the same connection with the country.

“I’ve been living in the US for over 10 years… I love this country because it gave me the opportunity to have a job, but that’s not why I’m going to say I’m American. I’m not, I’m Mexican. I’m proud of that… I just don’t agree (with Diego representing Mexico),” said the Mexican.
Despite recognizing that it is the public who chooses who to support, Yair “Pantera” Rodriguez shows frustration with the possibility that Mexico prefers Diego lopes in a possible fight between them.
“I’ve been killing myself for the last 10 years for my country. If they decide to keep Diego, if we have to fight, that’s up to them,” Rodriguez concluded.
Before any possibility of confrontation between them, Diego lopes e Yair Rodriguez have important commitments scheduled for next Saturday (12), at UFC 314. Lopes faces Alexander Volkanovsky for the featherweight belt (up to 65,7 kg), while “Pantera” measures forces with Patrick Pitbull.
