UFC star disappoints expectations of Ian Garry and Carlos Prates: 'big step backwards'

Chael Sonnen believes Irishman misses title shot with 'Nightmare' bout

The announcement of the fight between Carlos Prates e Ian Gary reverberates in the world of MMA. The Brazilian was removed from UFC 314 after an injury Geoff neal. In replacement, Prates was cast to fight on April 26th against the Irish in UFC Kansas City. Chael Sonnen, that called himself one of those responsible for the fight's marriage, does not consider the meeting a good deal for Garry.

The former fighter said on the show that he shares with Daniel Cormier, 'Good Guy/Bad Guy', not considering that this fight will give 'The Future' the title shot. Sonnen revealed he sees the clash as a step down for the Irishman.

“This fight doesn’t potentially propel him into a title fight, but it could be the one before that. I could see Ian and Prates, when the media and build-up happens, and we all like that fight,” Sonnen explained.

“Based on how this plays out, it could entice you to go for a number one contender fight. But it’s a big step back for Gary, and guys get asked to do that all the time.  You're in a promotion and as long as you're in a main event it doesn't matter who your opponent is, but that can change a little bit," he said.

Ian Gary expressed confidence and respect for Carlos Prates when commenting on the fight between them. On his social media, the Irishman preached respect for his opponent and sent a message to Brazil.

"Carlos Prates It's amazing, but this is my world. I love fighting! There's nothing I love more in this world than fighting. Brazil, sorry, you have two Brazilians in this fight. Let's go. Prates, see you on April 26th.”
