Last Tuesday (1), the MMA community was surprised by the announcement of the new main fight of the UFC Kansas City with Ian Gary facing up Carlos Prates in a decisive fight in the welterweight division (up to 77,1 kg). Former fighter and current Ultimate commentator, Chael Sonnen believes he played a fundamental role in confirming the duel.

In a video published on his official YouTube channel, the North American 'loudmouth' claims to have contacted the UFC and argued that the organization was underestimating the commercial potential presented by Carlos Prates, of whom he showed himself to be a fan.

“I begged the UFC to take a good look at Carlos (Prates). I believe they were underestimating his popularity. I asked them to take another look because they were overlooking a cult hero. I may have nothing to do with it, but I can't help but think that I did, because two days later Carlos Prates was announced for the main fight against Ian Gary”, Sonnen said.

Ranked 13th in the welterweight rankings, Carlos Prates had a magnificent 2024, with four knockout victories in four fights. The Brazilian had a fight scheduled against Geoff neal, tenth in the ranking, in UFC 314, on November 12, but saw the American cancel his participation in the event due to an injury.

Now, the 'Nightmare' challenge will be against the Irishman Ian Machado Garry, seventh in the ranking, who is looking to recover from the defeat suffered against Shavkat Rakhmonov in December, the only one of his career so far. The two face each other in the main fight of the UFC Kansas City, on April 26th.
