Last week, Cain Velazquez Velasquez Jr. was sentenced to five years in prison in Santa Clara County Court in California (USA) for the 2022 shooting. Velasquez's sentence was handed down by Judge Arthur Bocanegra on Monday (24). The former UFC heavyweight champion (up to 120,2 kg) was judged for attempted murder and other crimes against Harry Goulart, who allegedly committed child sexual abuse against Velasquez's son.

In the episode that occurred in 2022, Velasquez chased Harry Goulart by car and fired several shots using a firearm. However, he apparently missed the man, and his bullet hit the defendant's stepfather. The former fighter was imprisoned for 1283 days, which represents almost three and a half years, before being granted conditional release to respond in freedom.

Velasquez's former coach, Javier Melendez, recently revealed on the show “Javier & Mo Show"that, at the time of the events, Cain underwent a brain scan, with the aim of experts finding answers about his behavior. Melendez reported that the former UFC champion failed the exams.

“Cain had a zero for impulsivity. He couldn’t stop himself. Whatever he did, he couldn’t stop himself. He just reacted. He couldn’t stop himself. He was incapable of doing that. Science has proven that to be a fact. So he couldn’t do anything about his feelings, his anger. He just went,” Melendez said.

Regarding the five-year sentence handed down last week, the coach believes that the sentence, given Cain's behavior and also because of the time he has already spent in detention, will be much shorter. This is because of the 1283 days he has already served, both in jail and under house arrest.

“So depending on where they put Cain, it’s either going to be 80 percent or 85 percent. If he’s at 80 percent, 80 percent of five years is what? It’s four years. So basically, he’ll do four to five months. Or if it’s 85, he’ll probably do eight months with good behavior,” he concluded.

The latest statement of Cain Velazquez before the trial that sentenced him to five years in prison, he had a tone of melancholy and regret. Velasquez said himself extremely ashamed of all the actions that culminated in the sentence.

The former UFC heavyweight champion had a record of 14 wins and three losses in his MMA career and last fought in February 2019, when he was knocked out by Francis Ngannou. Velasquez has notable victories over Brock Lesnar, Junior Gypsy, Bigfoot Silva and Travis Browne, among others.
