Carlos Prates He does not hide his smoking habit: he smokes up to 15 cigarettes a day, a number that reaches two or three packs at social events. The addiction, which began when he was 12 years old, persists even during the preparation periods for UFC fights, where the Brazilian has accumulated four consecutive victories by knockout.
“Per day? It depends, man. If I go to a party, two or three packs. On a normal day, maybe 10-15 cigarettes. If I’m worried about something, maybe a pack, two packs a day,” Carlos said in an interview with the Full Violence channel.

Despite smoking — a practice widely criticized among high-performance athletes — Prates claims to compensate for the risk with a rigorous training routine. The fighter's team has tried to help him quit smoking, but the attempt failed. In one week without smoking, Prates gained 5 kg, the result of binge eating and absence from training.
The habit follows the fighter until the hours before his fights. Carlos has admitted to smoking minutes before entering the UFC Apex, a venue with restrictions on smoking. On one occasion, organization officials had to stop him when he tried to smoke just before fighting (and knocking out) Neil Magny.
Despite concerns about the effect of addiction on his cardiovascular fitness, the Fighting Nerds star's performance remains impressive. With 21 wins and six losses in his career, the Brazilian has a streak of 10 consecutive knockouts — four of them in the UFC.
He awaits a new challenge at welterweight, after his fight against Geoff neal, marked for UFC 314, be canceled due to an opponent's injury.
