Experienced in the world of MMA and witness to several episodes during and after fights, Joe Rogan used his renowned podcast to defend something unusual: allowing strikes to the back of the head. Despite warning about the serious problems that athletes who are struck in this region can face, the narrator stated that he believes that other permitted areas are also vulnerable, such as the back of the head.

“I don’t even know when they should stop hitting people in the back of the head. It makes no sense at all and it should be legal (…) if you talk to a neuroscientist, they’ll tell you that’s a particularly vulnerable area. But isn’t it the temple? Isn’t it the eyes? Everything is very vulnerable,” Rogan argued in an edition of his podcast.

Amidst so many rules imposed in MMA, strikes to the back of the head have always been treated with great care in the sport. In order to prevent fighters from sustaining serious injuries to the point of possibly losing their movement, referees are instructed to warn fighters if a punch lands in the prohibited area.
