the defense of Cain Velazquez reacted with frustration to five-year prison sentence imposed on the former UFC champion this Monday (24). In a statement to 'MMA Junkie', lawyer Renee Hessling said that the verdict is 'bittersweet', since the legal team expected the fighter's freedom. The case, which involved an armed pursuit of Harry Goularte — accused of sexually abusing Velasquez's son in a daycare — had international repercussions.
“Today’s results are bittersweet. We had hoped that Mr. Velasquez would remain out of prison. However, the facts remain clear: Cain Velazquez He is a good man, a devoted father and a respected member of the community,” Hessling said.

The sentence, handed down by Judge Arthur Bocanegra in the Santa Clara Court (California), ends a process that lasted more than two years. The fighter was originally facing the charge of attempted premeditated murder, a crime that could result in life imprisonment. However, an agreement with the prosecution removed the qualifier of 'premeditation', reducing the maximum sentence. Velasquez, who has already spent 18 months in custody, will have part of the time converted to prison credit and is expected to be released in less than two and a half years.
The lawyer stressed that the athlete 'took responsibility for his actions' and highlighted his record as an exemplary figure.
“Throughout all of this, Cain has demonstrated courage and strength of character. When he is released, he will continue to lead by example. Protecting, contributing and caring for those around him,” Hessling added.

The case began in February 2022, when Velasquez chased and shot at a vehicle carrying Goularte, then suspected of molesting his four-year-old son.
The child was allegedly abused at a daycare run by Goularte's family, who is facing a separate sexual assault charge. The incident has sparked debate about vigilante justice and the limits of parental advocacy.
