Diego Lima mentions the importance of the BMF belt, but insists that his main objective is to face Makhachev

Keeping an eye on the turbulent scenario of the lightweight division (up to 70,3 kg) in the UFC, Diego Lima, coach of Charles of the Bronx, chose to open the game and comment on the possible future of his pupil in the category. Amidst big names, the coach highlighted the importance of the duel against Max Holloway for the BMF belt would bring to the former champion's career.

“As much as I am a businessman, I make every decision with my athletes. Holloway is the BMF champion and it is certainly a belt that Charles does not have yet and it would be a very good fight to do. Of course, if Makhachev did not fight in Ramadan or if there was already an agreement for Makhachev vs. Ilia Topuria, it would be a great fight for Charles to fight and secure the fight at the end of the year against Makhachev”, declared Diego in an interview with Sexto Round.

Despite the statement, Diego made a point of reinforcing that the main focus, number one objective, is a rematch against Makhachev for the linear belt in the lightweight division.

“However, Holloway, they say he will close (fight) with Dustin poirier, so our goal has always been the belt, Makhachev has always been the number one goal. So if it was mentioned in Holloway, it was because of these things that I said it. Makhachev made it clear that he will not fight Topuria, if that is really true, Charles, in my opinion, is definitely the first option. The guy who makes the most sense, certainly more sense than Gaethje. It is the fight that makes the most sense: Charles vs. Makhachev for the belt”, he concluded.

Currently second in the category ranking, Charles is coming off a great victory over Michael chandler and is looking forward to fighting for the belt in his next appearance in the octagon.
