Former UFC Champion Says Tom Aspinall Is Wasting His Time With Jon Jones: 'He's Just Making Fun Of Him'

Since winning the UFC interim heavyweight title (up to 120,2 kg), Tom aspinall has been campaigning for a title unification fight against Jon Jones. However, the linear champion has changed his position on facing the Brit several times.Robert whittaker gave a sincere opinion on the possibility of the fight happening.

On a recent episode of the 'MMArcade' podcast, Whittaker shared the theory that Jones is toying with Aspinall, feigning interest in the fight but with no real intention of facing him. The Australian suggested that 'Bones' could sign the contract, train for a while and then retire, as a way to taunt the interim champion. Despite this, he acknowledges that fighting the heavyweight champion would be a huge opportunity in the Brit's career.

“I think at this point I can see that Jon Jones is completely mocking Tom aspinall. I can see him signing the contract, training for five months and then just retiring. I think Jones is just teasing at this point. Like, yeah, it’s complicated, but this is the fight everyone wants, and Aspinall is just wasting his time… Fighting Jones is one of the biggest things Aspinall could do in his career. It might be worth the wait, it might be worth the risk,” Whittaker said.

While no deal has been finalized, the most recent updates on this story indicate that Jones would have demanded six months of training to prepare for Aspinall. Meanwhile, Dana White assured that the fight will happen, but admitted that negotiations have not yet reached the point where the UFC could officially announce it.
