The historic struggle between Lyoto Machida e Yoel romero, which took place in June 2015 at the UFC, became a topic of discussion again after the Cuban made a revelation about the Brazilian's health after the fight. The executioner stated that the former champion had gone into a coma after the knockout he suffered in the third round. The claim caused immediate repercussions, especially among MMA fans, but Lyoto was quick to deny the claim.

“I heard about it, but I haven’t seen the video. It doesn’t make any sense. It’s impossible for a fighter to go into a coma and then fight 20 more times. I had nose surgery because I actually broke my nose in that fight. I had a nose plug, so I couldn’t travel. It was a routine situation for someone in my profession,” Machida said in an interview with 'MMA Fighting'.

Lyoto's denial is direct and comes to deconstruct Romero's theory that the knockout he suffered in that fight had serious consequences, such as a coma, and that this would have affected his career. At the time of the fight, Machida was one of the most respected names in the category, but he was unable to avoid defeat to the Cuban. Since then, his career in the UFC has had its ups and downs.

'Lyoto Machida has fallen into a coma'

“After he fought me, he was never the same. It was a brutal injury. He went into a coma. I was worried and even talked to his manager because he was in a coma. That’s why I respect any fighter who does this. He risks his life,” said Romero.

The divergence in versions about what happened after the knockout raised a series of questions about the possible consequences of the fight, but, so far, there is no evidence that Lyoto Machida have faced a situation as serious as the one described by Yoel romero.

In the midst of all this, a curiosity arises: despite the intense rivalry, both are now in the same project, the Global Fight League (GFL), a new MMA league that introduces the concept of teams.
