Conor McGregor's MMA return is unlikely, says Chael Sonnen

According to Sonnen, McGregor's recent actions make a return to MMA difficult to become a reality

In a hiatus that has already lasted more than three years, it is not possible to say what the next step in his career will be. Conor McGregor as an MMA fighter. Undisputedly the greatest star of all time, the Irishman has shown no signs of returning to the sport since retiring from fighting with Michael chandler, scheduled for the UFC 303. In this context, for Chael Sonnen, McGregor's days as a professional athlete are over.

In an interview with Canadian journalist Ariel Helwani on 'The Ariel Helwani Show', last Tuesday (4), the American gangster ruled out a return by McGregor and even questioned the Irishman's injury when citing the withdrawal of UFC 303.

“He pulled out of the last fight, which was a record. They had $25 million waiting for them live and they still had $2 million in tickets to sell. He pulled out of a press conference where they brought an American company to Ireland. It’s a big deal to leave them hanging right there,” he said.

“The official reason he did this is because of a discolored pinkie toe, which may or may not be broken, and may or may not be his. He didn’t take a picture with his toe. He took a picture of a toe and posted it online. If you back out of a fight because of a discolored pinkie toe, which may or may not be yours, or may or may not be broken, you’re not going to fight again,” he concluded.

When asked about rumors of a boxing match between the Irishman and Logan Paul, Sonnen criticized the possibility of such a fight happening. In addition, he also mentioned the difficulty of putting together a big fight for McGregor due to the physical conditions in which the former champion may find himself.

“You’re going to walk away from a fight with Chandler (and) do what you did with Chandler, and then go on to something else? I don’t want that to be true. We have to believe that Conor can not only come back from the same situation he Chris Weidman had – with Chris Weidman being possibly the most disciplined guy in the sport (and) Conor being the most undisciplined guy in the sport? And he needs to come back better, because he's not going to be booked for three-round fights, he's going to be booked exclusively for five-round main events. The laws of logic disqualify that,” he said.
