The management of the Brazilian MMA Athletic Commission went back and changed the result of the fight between Leandro Buscapé and Drew dober at UFC Fight Night 62, last Saturday (23), in Rio de Janeiro, for a “No Contest” (fight without result).

The original result was Buscapé's victory by submission, but the triumph was only achieved thanks to an error by referee Eduardo Herdy, who hastily stopped the fight without Dober having given up or showing signs that he was unable to defend himself.

After the event, CABMMA operations director Cristiano Sampaio had said that there was no justification for changing the result. “It is not possible to change the result. There are three cases in which the result can change: the first is a summation error by the judges giving a different result. The second case is collusion, when there is bad faith between the judges, no matter what the result was, there is already a pre-defined one between the judges. This is another thing that happens out there due to betting exchanges. The third is a failure in the referee's interpretation that generates a result different from what it should have been. There is an error of law and fact. There was a real mistake there. An error of law is when there is this failure in the interpretation of the law. It was not a failure to interpret the rule”, he said at the time.

However, in a statement released this Thursday (26), the body, in a decision endorsed by Sampaio himself, chose to go back and announce the reversal of the result to a “No Contest”. “As for Mr. Eduardo Herdy, CABMMA is grateful for his professionalism in recognizing this error, helping the entity to evolve in its regulatory affairs in Brazil, seeking to develop higher standards and demonstrating its commitment as an official referee of the sport. Therefore, after analyzing the case, the Executive Committee, chaired by Mr. Rafael Favetti (Chairman & CEO) and Mr. Cristiano Sampaio (COO), decided to annul the result of the fight between Leandro Silva and Andrew Dober and declare it officially as a 'No Contest'”, says an excerpt from the note, published by the North American website “MMA Fighting”.

The premature interruption of the fight on the UFC Fight Night Rio preliminary card drove president Dana White crazy. At the press conference after the event, last weekend, the director spared no criticism of referee Eduardo Herdy. “What happened in that fight was absurd and unacceptable. We will pay the win bonus to Drew dober. It didn't hit and it didn't go out. What did the referee see? Ask him. I don’t know”, lamented the leader. After the result change was announced, Dana used her profile on Twitter To celebrate. “I would like to thank the Brazilian Athletic Commission for doing the right thing and turning Dober x Leandro Silva into a 'No Contest'”, he published.

Cases such as Eduardo Herdy's intervention in the fight between Leandro Buscapé and Drew dober are not unheard of in the UFC. In 2010, in Canada, Matt wiman beat Mac Danzig by submission, also via guillotine, after a premature interruption by referee Yves Lavigne. In that case, however, the local Athletic Commission chose not to reverse the result, despite evidence that the intervention had been mistaken.
