Experiencing financial crisis, Mark Coleman asks fans for help to pay for medical treatment

Former champion and member of the UFC Hall of Fame is hospitalized due to a series of complications after surgery and needs at least R$62 in donations

At 50 years old, the former champion and member of UFC Hall of Fame Mark Coleman is experiencing one of the most delicate moments of his life. Going through a serious financial crisis, Coleman needs, but is unable to pay, his medical expenses corresponding to the treatment of complications following hip surgery, resulting from a series of problems in the region that has been suffering over the last few years. Thus, the fighter, through the initiative of his teammate Wes Sims, is opening a financing campaign and asking fans to help him cover the costs.

The campaign, promoted through specialized website “GoFundMe”, is called “Save the Hammer” (in free translation, “Save the 'Hammer'”, his nickname as a fighter). The first objective is to raise at least US$20 (R$62) of the US$500 (R$1,54 million) indicated. As of this Thursday morning (12), US$ 14,7 thousand (R$ 45,5 thousand) had already been raised. Among the 417 donations already made, the highest was made by doctor Dr. Frank Patino, responsible for the “Patino Diet”, who donated the equivalent of US$ 1 thousand (R$ 3,10 thousand).

According to the fundraising campaign's presentation text, Mark Coleman has been suffering from health problems since undergoing hip surgery in 2013. Since then, the former fighter had several complications in the operated area and needed to undergo a new intervention. surgery on March 9th. During the procedure, doctors discovered several infections and diagnosed that Coleman was almost in septic shock, a very serious condition that occurs when a virus or bacteria enters the bloodstream and interrupts circulation. To make matters worse, “Hammer” has no source of income and his health insurance is about to expire.

Coming from wrestling and a veteran of MMA even before the sport was known by that name, Mark Coleman ended his professional career with 16 wins and ten losses. Coleman won his first six professional fights and with his triumphs became champion of the UFC 10 and 11 tournaments, in addition to becoming the organization's first heavyweight belt holder. For his achievements, “Hammer”, who also played in the now-defunct PRIDE, was the fifth athlete to be nominated for the Hall of Fame of the UFC, joining the select team of honor in March 2008.
