The world of illegal fights in the state of Florida, in the southwest of the United States, is the subject of the documentary “Dawg Fight”, which will be released on March 13th at the Miami Film Festival. The film, directed by Billy Corben, shows the trajectory of Dada 5000, organizer of clandestine fights, and the intense fights played in an improvised ring and without the use of gloves.

The documentary went through a production process that lasted around five years, two of which were just filming. In addition to showing the violent combats, the film also details the paths followed by the main participants, who entered the world of fighting in search of glory, money or recognition in the community.
“This is Miami. People attend cockfights in Miami. I mean, people compare it to a human cockfight, and I think that's not completely wrong. The appeal, in many ways, is similar to that of the NFL or MMA. It’s our most primal instinct”, explained Corben, in an interview with the North American website “MMA Junkie”.
According to the director, most of the fight participants are looking for money or a springboard for more prominent competitions, as happened with Kimbo Slice – who, in the past, had Dada 5000 himself as a bodyguard. However, Corben states that “Dawg Fight” shows a harsh reality. “As the story unfolds before our cameras, we try to show that even winners have empty victories. What did they really gain?” he asks.
The documentary will premiere this Friday and should be available on platforms such as Netflix from April onwards.
