Vitor belfort has held the position of number one contender in the UFC middleweight division since November 2013, when he defeated Dan Henderson and qualified to compete for the title. However, even at the beginning of 2015, the Brazilian still hasn't had the opportunity to fight the champion. Even so, the “Phenomenon” ruled out being frustrated or anxious about the fight, and stated that he is, in fact, enjoying the moment.

Originally, Belfort would face the category champion, Chris Weidman, in May last year. However, the end of testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) meant that the duel between the two was rescheduled for December. Weidman discovered an old injury and was unable to fight on the stipulated date, and the fight was moved again to February. The champion suffered another injury, and now the fight is scheduled for May 23, at UFC 187.

Despite the setbacks on the way to fighting for the belt, Belfort stated that he sees all recent events as an opportunity to evolve. “I don’t feel any anxiety. I'm enjoying every second. I have a way of living that helps me a lot. I live each day as if it were the last of my life, so I try to face the moment. That's what's most important. In life, sometimes we hope for something, but end up having to face a big mountain. People are afraid of mountains, they stay in their comfort zone. When you do your best, good things happen”, declared Belfort, in an interview with the podcast “The MMA Hour”.

After the injury to Weidman, who was left out of UFC 184, the organization would have offered Belfort the possibility of having a new fight, worth the interim belt. However, this fight did not end up happening. Belfort spoke out on the matter and gave his version. “When my office heard the news, everyone was emotional. My manager made a proposal to find a replacement. They made me a counter-offer, but my coaches said no, that the objective was Weidman. I am a general, but I also know how to be a soldier and trust my team. So, I trusted my coaches”, he clarified.
