Tired of suffering with the weight cut, Henderson had been flirting with a change of category for some time, as the welterweight division has a limit 7 kg higher than the lightweight division (70 kg, compared to 77 kg). The opportunity arose when Stephen Thompson, who would face Thatch in the main fight of the event, suffered an injury at the last minute and had to be removed from the fight.

At 31 years old, Henderson is going through an unstable moment in the UFC since losing his belt, against Anthony Pettis, in August 2013. Since then, the fighter has won two fights (against Josh thomson and Rustam Khabilov), but lost the last two, against Rafael dos Anjos e Donald Cerrone.
Also American, Thatch, two years younger, has only had two fights in the UFC, but has been hampered by injuries, as he hasn't fought since November 2013. In his appearances in the octagon, “Rukus”, as he is nicknamed, won in a withering manner Justin Edwards and Paulo thiago, in fights that didn't even reach the middle of the first round. Overall, his record is 11 wins and just one loss.
