During discussion with Daniel Cormier about who should be chosen as 'Fighter of the Year' so far, Chael Sonnen went against his compatriot and ignored Alex Poatán as a candidate for the title. In the commentator's view, Sean O'Malley, current bantamweight champion (up to 61,2kg.) is the one who has the most merit in winning an unprecedented award in his career.
“When you look at 'Male Fighter of the Year,' I'm going to pick Sean O'Malley. When 'Sugar' Sean fought 'Chito' Vera, I didn't know Sean was that good. I believed Sean was the best guy in the world. I thought he was competitive; there are guys who could beat him, but he could beat them too. But when he fought against 'Chito' Vera and dominated him”, declared Sonnen on the program Good Guy/Bad Guy.

As he continued his speech, Chael highlighted the bantamweight champion's achievements that justified the award.
“Looking at the growth Sean has had (since the first fight against Vera), not to mention the pressure he's had going from Apex to the top of the list, a $14,1 million sale (in UFC 299), and you have to follow the show that Dustin poirier he did. There was a lot of pressure on this young man, who is a showman. Can you confirm what you say? Not only did he do it, he did it for 25 minutes. 15 minutes into the fight, he could have hit the brakes. It wasn't good enough for him. He tried to end the fight. I thought it was the complete package,” he concluded.

Champions of their respective categories, Poatan and O'Malley are experiencing great moments in their careers. The Brazilian currently has two title defenses, while the North American is preparing to defend it for the second time. Sean is expected to face Merab Dvalishvili in his next appearance.
