Rafael dos Anjos asks to be removed from UFC rankings and explains decision

Former lightweight champion announces retirement from the old division and fights only at welterweight

At 39, Rafael dos Anjos confirmed his decision to retire from the UFC lightweight division (up to 70,3kg). On his social networks, the former category champion publicly asked for him to be removed from the division's ranking. The athlete, however, assured that he does not intend to hang up his gloves, maintaining performances at welterweight (up to 77,1kg).

“Take me out of the lightweight rankings. For the athletes in the category who are challenging me, I will no longer compete in the division. I have nothing left to prove. Outside of competition, I weigh around 88,4kg. at 39 years old. There are a lot of fights that make sense at welterweight,” wrote Rafael.

Finally, Dos Anjos reinforced that he does not intend to abandon the sport. The athlete even suggested a date for a new challenge.

“I want to fight in July. UFC, put me back in the Octagon”, he concluded.


An icon of Brazilian MMA, Rafael led the lightweight division between 2015 and 2016. The athlete completed one title defense.
