Former champion and current first place in the featherweight rankings (up to 65,7 kg), Max Holloway would be, for many, the obvious first option to challenge the new champion Ilia Topuria, crowned in February after a knockout over Alexander Volkanovsky No. UFC 298. Despite this, the Hawaiian does not regret having agreed to face Justin gaethje, in the lightweight division (up to 70,3 kg), for the 'BMF' belt.

In a video published on his official YouTube channel, Holloway, who faces Gaethje in the UFC 300, on April 13, opened up about his decision to accept the fight, even though it leaves him further away from a title fight in his category.

“A lot of people think it was crazy that I accepted this fight and ask me why I don't wait for (Ilia) Topuria. Not everyone knows, but this game gets to you fast, man. Nothing is promised. How many times have we seen someone promised a title shot and nothing happens? How many times have we seen someone fight for an interim title and nothing happens? Me and Gaethje would be next in our divisions, right? But how often does this work? Not always. Everyone says I would be next for Topuria, but would I really be?”, asked the Hawaiian.

According to Holloway, another point that weighed in favor of accepting the fight was the idea that Alexander Volkanovsky would be worthy of an immediate rematch against Ilia Topuria.

“Ultimately, I always thought Volkanovski would win the immediate rematch if he lost to Topuria. I would have to wait anyway. As for Gaethje, who would have known that Charles would suffer a cut and Islam makhachev Would you be left without an opponent? If you wait in this sport, the sport runs over you. And it runs over you quickly. What you have to do is keep busy. I'm blessed with the opportunity to be in this situation with Justin gaethje”, Finished.
