Verbally agreed to face each other in the future, Islam makhachev underestimated the trajectory of Dustin poirier and recalled defeats in every opportunity to compete for the linear title of the rival's division. After the veteran claim that he did more for the sport than the Russian, the current lightweight champion (70,3kg.) did not hesitate when responding to the North American's words.

“Dustin if you had managed to beat anyone, you would be holding that belt right now, not me”, declared the champion on his official account. 'X' (old Twitter).

After the statement, Islam was responded to by a follower, who pointed out Poirier as an athlete at another level. Willing to continue with provocation, the Russian ironized the comment.

“His level is: eternal challenger. How many title defeats? Two? Three?”, shot Makhachev.

Coming off a great victory in UFC 299, Dustin poirier expects to become the next challenger for the title. In his long career with the organization, the fighter wasted every opportunity to win the linear lightweight belt. In his first chance, the veteran was submitted by Khabib Nurmagomedov and in the future by Charles of the Bronx, both via rear naked choke.
