On the rise in the welterweight division (up to 77,1kg.) of the UFC, Ian Gary accepted the challenge of Colby covington, but imposed drastic demands for the fight to take place. When having the wife teased by North American, the Irishman criticized the 'bad boy' and proposed a new plan. The athlete's idea is to fight a definitive challenge, in which the loser would announce his retirement from MMA.

"Listen, Colby covington, you are in no position to tell me what to do with my life. You gave me three demands that have nothing to do with fighting. I don't know how you were raised, but women are not our property or trophies. You should be focused on me. I'm the one who's going to blow a hole in your head inside the octagon. (…) His only achievement in the UFC was losing three title fights. Also, you don't have any wins against a top 15 at the moment. Why should I face you?” said Garry.

After criticism of the possible opponent, Ian went further. The fighter suggested a confrontation in which the loser would abandon MMA permanently.

“I challenge you to an 'I give up' showdown. One of us needs to say 'I give up'. Whoever says so needs to retire. Take off your gloves, leave them in the center of the octagon and goodbye. I will be responsible for your last chapter in MMA. I will purge Colby covington of the UFC forever and I will make MMA great again”, he concluded.

Three-time challenger for the welterweight belt, Covington has not competed since his defeat against the champion Leon edwards, at the end of 2023. At the time, the North American returned to competitions after more than a season of inactivity, and had no chance against the title holder.
