Close to face Leon edwards for the welterweight belt (up to 77,1kg.) UFC 296, Colby covington decided to revive the rivalry with Kamaru Usman. Victim of the former champion on two occasions, the American recalled the historic knockout suffered by the Nigerian in the confrontation that determined the athlete's downfall in his former reign. Controversially, 'Chaos' took part of the credit for the triumph of its next opponent.

“I was shocked, initially. He didn't expect the fight to end like this. (…) Usman made a wrong read, received a kick and paid the price. (…) I have no doubt that I was responsible for his (Kamaru) defeat. His chin was never the same after I weakened it. I kicked his head, tired his legs and then he asked for rest. It’s not like Leon did something that I didn’t do,” said Covington, in an interview with UFC.

Victim of Edwards' emblematic action in UFC 278, Usman maintained a solid reign in the division. The fighter, however, ended up being knocked out in the last round after dominating his opponent for most of the almost 25 minutes played.

Former interim welterweight champion, Colby will compete for the title for the third time in his career with the company. In the first two opportunities, the North American was surpassed by Kamaru himself.
