An accidental collision of heads was responsible for taking Charles of the Bronx of the long-awaited rematch against Islam makhachev, for the lightweight belt (up to 70,3kg), in the main fight of the UFC 294. Shortly after the shocking news of the duel being cancelled, the Brazilian took to social media to explain what had happened.
In a video published in 'Instagram' stories, Charles of the Bronx stated that he suffered an accidental headbutt in the final stretch of the last sparring session before leaving for Abu Dhabi. The former champion lamented the situation, shared images of the frightening cut that opened on his eyebrow and revealed that he had taken 'eight or nine stitches' to suture the wound.

“I'm out of UFC Abu Dhabi. Today, in my last training session in Brazil before traveling, I ended up suffering a headbutt that opened a very deep cut. I think I had eight or more stitches, I don't really know. It's a very deep cut to be able to fight, to be able to recover in the little time I have and put on a great fight. My team, together with the UFC, decided to leave the fight and be ready for the next one. It's not just a fight, it's a title fight. I couldn't get in just to get in. Many will judge, but I couldn’t enter if I was 80%”, said Charles.
With the output of Charles of the Bronx of the event, Ultimate acted quickly and has already confirmed Alexander Volkanovsky as a replacement. The Australian moves up in weight again to face Islam makhachev for the lightweight title after being defeated by the Russian in a very balanced duel in the UFC 284, in February this year.
