15 years later, Junior Cigano repeats the feat and surpasses Fabrício Werdum in an MMA fight without gloves

In a rematch between former UFC champions, Santa Catarina comes out on top and beats Rio Grande do Sul in a split decision from the judges

Protagonist at Gamebred Bareknuckle MMA 5, held this Friday (8), in Jacksonville (USA), Junior Gypsy got the better of the rematch against Fabricio Werdum. 15 years after their first meeting, the Santa Catarina native repeated his 2008 feat and left the cage with victory against his compatriot. After three rounds between the former UFC champions, the veteran was declared the winner in a split decision.

Victorious in the clash, Cigano has plenty of reasons to celebrate. With the triumph, the Brazilian ends a dramatic sequence of five knockout defeats suffered in recent years.

Back in the cage after more than two years of inactivity, Werdum scared his compatriot at times. At 46 years old, 'Vai Cavalo', however, was far from the performances that made him known worldwide in world MMA.

Reunion of 'giants'

The fight started with Werdum taking the initiative with a sequence of kicks. Cigano saved his attacks and seemed to prepare the withering attack. With just over a minute left, Fabrício attempted a takedown, but Junior defended himself well. The confrontation was tense and the fighters avoided direct clashes. In the final minute, Werdum managed to take down his rival, but Cigano got up immediately. The gaucho remained 'glued' to his opponent and pressed against the bars. In the final seconds, Fabrício went to the canvas after a direct shot from Junior, but ended up saved by the bell.

In the second round, the first attack came from Werdum, with a straight shot followed by a high kick. Junior bet on the counterattack and tried to surprise his compatriot. Halfway through the stage, Fabrício tried another takedown, but the Santa Catarina native was attentive and made another save. In the final minute, the gaucho scored more, attacking with kicks to Cigano's torso. Close to the end of the stage, Fabrício surprised him with a straight shot and got another takedown afterwards. Junior managed to free himself and stayed on his feet, while 'Vai Cavalo' chose to remain on the ground, 'inviting' his opponent to take on the jiu-jitsu challenge. Cigano rejected it and kicked his opponent's legs until the timer ran to zero.

The third round began with Cigano delivering a clean jab to his opponent's face. Werdum tried to surround his compatriot, but saved his attacks. Halfway through the round, Fabrício tried another takedown, but Cigano defended himself. In the final minute, Fabrício had a deep cut on his left eyebrow, but continued in the fight. Junior attacked his compatriot's wound with specific blows. The fight ended with the athletes studying each other in the center of the Octagon.

In a fight between a former LFA representative and a former UFC representative, better for Dana White's competitor. Famous for his knockout power, Joel Bauman managed to impose his main characteristic. With the victory, the middleweight, who debuted in MMA without gloves, added the second consecutive victory in his recent record.

In a fight between former UFC representatives, Joshua Weems came out on top. Opponent of Irwin Rivera, the athlete did not fall for his rival's provocations and was superior in a confrontation marked by monotony. After three warm rounds, the combatant was declared the winner with a unanimous decision.

With the victory, Weems added the second positive result in a row.

Provocative from start to finish, Rivera left something to be desired in the fight itself. The stumble ended the fighter's series of two victories.

Former PFL representative, Ago Huskic breathed easy after participating in Gamebred MMA. In a featherweight challenge, the fighter had a lukewarm confrontation against Brandon davis, but won again in martial arts. After three rounds, the athlete was declared the winner in a unanimous decision.

Before participating in MMA without gloves, Huskic was going through a dramatic series in his career. In the challenges that preceded this Saturday's clash, the fight accumulated five consecutive defeats.

Smiles on one side, concern on the other. Hit in the spots, Brandon davis, now, has four consecutive setbacks.

Ex-UFC wins in insane fight

Former UFC representative, veteran Anthony Njokuani won an insane fight in MMA without gloves. In his third appearance in the sport, the 43-year-old athlete had a mind-boggling confrontation against fellow veteran Brandon Jenkins. Despite some scares throughout the fight, the athlete prevailed after three disputed rounds, being declared the winner in a unanimous decision by the judges.

With the victory, Njokuani achieves a positive result in MMA without gloves. Now, the fighter has two triumphs and one setback.

Having spent time in ONE Championship and PFL, Jenkins completed his first challenge in the new modality. The athlete, however, did not have the expected positive result.

Venezuelan fights and wins by knockout

Representative of Venezuela at Gamebred MMA, Jhonasky Sojo was a protagonist with great perseverance in his challenge. Tyler Hill's opponent, the South American was controlled for much of the first round, but took advantage of his rival's oversight to turn the match around. In the final seconds, after his opponent made a mistake in seeking a takedown, the fighter achieved victory via hard ground and pound, winning by technical knockout in the first stage.

With the victory, Sojo has a lot to celebrate. Now, the fighter has ended a sequence of two setbacks.

Beaten in the event, Hill, who has played in the PFL, was unable to reach the mark of two positive results in a row.

Another newcomer to the sport, Reggie Northrup used his physical strength to score his first victory in MMA without gloves. A heavyweight representative, the fighter gave Cody Herbert no chance and controlled his opponent for three rounds. After three rounds, the fighter was declared the winner with a unanimous decision by the judges.

American football player, Northrup, now has two positive results in combat sports.

Annulled in the clash, Herbert showed little intimacy in the sport. Even with greater experience, the fighter did not impress and suffered his third setback in the last five challenges.

A debutant in bare-knuckle MMA, Shahzaid Rind shocked in his first engagement in the sport. Carlos Guerra's opponent, the fighter showed calmness to escape a heel hook and didn't spare his opponent afterwards. With aggressive ground and pound, the fighter forced the referee to stop the challenge in the first round.

With tests in kickboxing, Muay Thai, karate, the fighter now has triumphs in bare-knuckle MMA.

Guerra's stumble marks the third consecutive defeat in combat sports.

In his first MMA appearance without gloves, Juan Alvarez needed little time to impress the spectators. Christopher Wingate's opponent, the fighter didn't give his opponent a chance and settled the score 13 seconds into the fight. With a heel hook, the combatant achieved a positive result.

The challenge marked Alvarez's second triumph in professional MMA appearances. In his debut, in MMA with gloves, which took place in 2022, the athlete had surpassed Jesus Borrego in the judges' decision.
