After defeating Lyoto Machida and keep the UFC middleweight belt, Chris Weidman made a less than generous assessment of his preparations for combat. The American reported having experienced several problems during his training for the fight, which he won with a unanimous decision from the judges.

“To be honest, this was probably my worst training period I've ever had. But at least we managed to accomplish our task. For two weeks I couldn't do the gauntlet and I had to go to the doctor to make sure my hand wasn't broken. In the end, it was just ligament problems. My knees didn't feel like they should have, but I moved on and I refuse to use that as an excuse. But in this training, everything went wrong. I had a lot of problems”, commented Weidman, in a press conference after the event.

Furthermore, Weidman stated that he intended to use striking to facilitate his path to takedowns, but an injury to his foot hindered his plans. “This is MMA. Thanks to Ray Longo [his head coach], I'm very confident in my striking. The kicks would be part of the game, and it sucks that, in the first round, I threw a kick and he saved it well with his elbow. My foot was killing me and I couldn’t kick like I used to,” he said.
