In September of 2013, Jon Jones had the most difficult fight of his career to date, against Alexander Gustafson. The light heavyweight champion didn't have an easy time hitting his opponent, having even been taken down for the first time in his career in MMA. The victory came only through the judges' decision, narrowly. Still, Jones rates his performance that night as one of the strongest of his career.

In an interview with the North American broadcaster “ESPN”, Jones stated that the adversities of that fight made him show some of his qualities. “In some ways, that fight with Gustafsson was one of my strongest performances. Finish the fight the way I did and show the heart I showed to be able to continue as champion, breaking the record of Tito Ortiz that same night. I would choose that as one of my best presentations”, pointed out the champion.

The rematch already has a date: it will be on September 27th, at a location yet to be defined. Jones considers that a successful performance would have to go beyond victory. “A successful performance for me would be to go out there and dominate him. I managed to dominate everyone I've ever faced, except Gustafsson, and success for me would be not only winning that fight, but dominating him,” he commented.

Despite the statements, Jones did not always show satisfaction with his performance in the first fight against Gustafsson. In April, “Bones” stated that performed that night with only 80% of its capacity.
