Businessman defends Jon Jones' current stance: 'He is maturing'

Malki Kawa says the light heavyweight champion is slowly realizing that he can say what he really thinks more often

UFC light heavyweight champion and considered the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world, Jon Jones has seen its name involved in some controversies in recent months. In your fight against Glover TeixeiraIn April, Jones received criticism for put your finger in the Brazilian's eyes; Last week, the North American was questioned for asking for a fight against Daniel Cormier, and not against Alexander Gustafson, considered next in line for a title fight.

Both occasions caused Jones to speak out in videos that caused controversy on social media. In the episode involving Glover, Jones mocked the opinion of his critics, while, regarding the fight with Gustafsson, the champion showed more irritation. Such a stance on the part of Jones caused Cormier to suggest that the fighter accept the role of “bad boy” once and for all.

However, Jones' manager, Malki Kawa, does not view recent events negatively. For him, all of this is the result of personal growth on the part of the fighter. “I think what's happening is that Jones is maturing. He’s feeling more comfortable saying what he thinks, without worrying about the press or other people,” said Kawa, in an interview with The MMA Hour podcast.

“There were times when he had to hold his tongue and hide what he felt, but he realized that it was okay to talk. That's the cool thing about Jon Jones. He’s learning that it’s okay to speak his mind more,” Kawa continued.

Despite all the controversy, the rematch between Jones and Gustafsson was made official for September 27, in Toronto, Canada, in the same place where the two faced each other for the first time, in September 2013. On that occasion, Jones took the best after five rounds of great balance.
