If he beats Henderson, Cormier says he will wait to fight for the belt

Rarely has the light heavyweight category been as busy as it has been recently. Jon Jones defended his belt for the seventh time by defeating Glover Teixeira at UFC 172, and shortly after, it was confirmed that his next defense will be against Alexander Gustafson, on a date to be defined. And, possibly, the challenger for the belt after the Swede will be known at UFC 173, in May.

In this ocasion, Daniel Cormier will face Dan Henderson in the evening's co-main event. The winner will, in the future, face whoever wins between Jones and Gustafsson.

If he beats Henderson, Cormier stated that he intends to wait until he receives his opportunity to fight for the belt instead of having another fight in this period. “I've waited long enough. This will be my fifth win against top 10 fighters, and I won't fight anyone else. I'll sit back, get better and wait to fight with Jon Jones. If it takes nine months, I’ll wait nine months”, said Cormier, in an interview with the North American website “MMA Fighting”. “It's not that I'm afraid of losing to someone, because I don't believe in that. I think I can beat everyone. I just think at a certain point you have to take a stand on what really matters.”

And Cormier really believes that the title fight will be against Jones, as he is betting on the champion winning against Gustafsson. Asked if the Swede had any chance of winning, he replied: “No chance. I mean, let me rephrase that. I'm not saying he doesn't have a chance. I'm just saying, if I had to bet my money, I'd say Jon Jones, because, honestly, I think it is better and has more resources”, he said.
