Last weekend, fighter Tyrone Spong suffered a serious injury to his right leg during a fight at the Glory kickboxing event, held in the city of Istanbul, Turkey. The fact that draws attention is that the move was very similar to what happened with Anderson Silva in his second fight against Chris Weidman, at UFC 168.
Spong was in the final of the light heavyweight tournament against local athlete Gokhan Saki. The injury happened in the first round, when Spong threw a shot that was blocked by the Turk. Despite the seriousness of the incident, the Surinamese fighter remained calm until medical aid arrived.
It was Spong's second fight of the night, as, shortly before, he had beaten Brazilian Saulo Cavalari in the judges' decision. Spong is a training partner for Vitor belfort at the Blackzilians gym and also works in MMA: he has already had two fights in the World Series of Fighting (WSOF) event, winning two victories. The third fight was already scheduled, for July 5th, but the chances of Spong being able to participate are remote.
