Chosen as 'Fight of the Night' in the UFC 283, Glover Teixeira e Jamahal hill staged a bloody confrontation. Faced with the punishment suffered by the Brazilian, his coach, John Hackleman, revealed that he would have liked to throw in the towel, but he was not the coach capable of doing so.

“I'm a trainer known for stopping fights between rounds. I just don't like seeing guys get any kind of beating or brain damage. I suggested that the fight be stopped, but they didn't agree with my decision (…) I'm grateful that they didn't stop. I know this wouldn't have gone over well. This would have made a lot of people unhappy, and I don't want the blame to fall on me. I would have given up after the third round. I would have been completely happy with the fight stopping there. I saw no reason for it to continue after that,” Hackleman told 'MMA Fighting'.

After the defeat, Glover announced his retirement and indicated that it was necessary to preserve his health. John said that the Brazilian would have made the same decision, regardless of the result that night.

“Win or lose, he would have retired. He is ready. He's done enough. He proved everything he needed. He's smiling, telling everyone he's okay, even though you can tell he wasn't. 'I'm so fine now. I love life! I love that!' But he was saying that without much truth,” said the coach.

Impacted by the fight, Hackleman shared the feeling he has during the fights and said that he will not go through situations like these again.

“When my pupils struggle, I cannot put myself in their shoes. I wish my coaches had stopped some of my fights sooner. I love these guys, but it’s not good for them either (…) that was the last time I worked as an athlete’s corner”, concluded the American.
