Despite proving itself with three victories over Israel adesanya, Alex Poatán still lives with distrust from the MMA community. Proof of this is that, for many, the Brazilian would enter as a 'zebra' in an eventual rematch against the Nigerian for the middleweight belt (up to 83,9kg.). However, some do not allow themselves to doubt the current champion.

“No, no, if he (Alex Poatán) fight with Izzy (Adesanya), he will beat Izzy again. It's just, I don't know, I feel like he had a mission to beat him. Now he doesn't even – I mean, of course he cares because everyone cares about money, but he knows it's risky to fight someone who has really good grappling,” Vettori told 'The Schmo'.
