O Jungle Fight 64 rocked Praia do Farol de São Tomé, in Campos dos Goytacazes (RJ), on Friday night (17). However, the night's main attraction ended in controversy. Rayner Silva defeated Junior Abedi by technical knockout and defended the flyweight belt on the show, but the referee's interruption was contested by part of the audience present.

Responsible for mediating the duel, the experienced Alessandro Souza explained his decision and made clear his intention to fully preserve the physical integrity of the Relma Team fighter.

“I think I interpreted that situation correctly. Because by the time he fell to the ground and was under the guillotine, the wound was already open. I waited a bit, as he had his face on the ground, when he got up and started striking, I couldn't stop as it was a continuous action. From the moment he touched the screen, I realized that the wound was serious and one more punch could even leave him blind. My main function is to preserve the athlete’s physical integrity, I will always value this issue,” he said.

One of the biggest refereeing references in Brazil, Flávio Almendra supported his teammate's decision and stated that Abedi was unable to continue in the fight.

PUBLICITY:

“I think Alessandro got it right. I often say that the difference between a brain concussion and a headache the next day is a punch. Abedi was unable to continue the fight, it could have had irreversible consequences for his career. The referee's conscience must always be clear.“, declared Almendra.
