Without Cain Velazquez, without UFC in Mexico. In the mind of the organization's president Dana White, the logic is simple. During a conversation with the press after the UFC on FOX 9 press conference, last Saturday (14), White revealed that the event's top brass talked about a possible incursion into Mexican soil without the heavyweight champion, who recently went through shoulder surgery and remains away from the octagon, and concluded that the best thing is to wait for Velasquez to return.
“Lorenzo (Fertitta, CEO of Zuffa – the company that manages Ultimate) and I were talking about going to Mexico without Cain (Velasquez). We don't think it's a good idea. So, I say let’s wait”, said the leader. There is still no exact date for Velasquez's return, but it is estimated that the heavyweight champion will only fight again in the second half of 2014.
Initially, Ultimate's plan was to hold a fight between Cain Velazquez e Fabricio Werdum for the heavyweight belt in Mexico, at the beginning of 2014. The worsening of Velasquez's injury and the surgery the champion underwent last week, however, postponed the organization's project. Werdum must now face the winner of the duel between Travis Browne and Josh Barnett, which takes place at UFC 168, on December 28th.
