After the success of the exhibition duel against the comedian Whindersson Nunes at the beginning of the year, Acelino Popó Freitas has more plans for the coming months. With a challenge set against Pele Landy, a pioneer in MMA, in the next edition of Fight Music Show, in September, the former world champion has another duel scheduled for 2022 and another under negotiation for the beginning of 2023.
In an interview with Portal do Vale Tudo”, Popó revealed that he will face Argentine Marcos “Chino” Maidana, also a former world champion, on October 29th. Furthermore, the Brazilian revealed that he received an offer to duel with world MMA legend Georges St-Pierre, former UFC welterweight (up to 77kg) and middleweight (up to 83,9kg) champion in January, in Brazil .
“This week they called me from a number in the United States, asking if I would accept to fight in January, in a big event, where Sakuraba and one of the Gracies will probably also fight. I was offered (Georges) St-Pierre, in January, in the south, probably in Balneário Camboriú. I said I accepted and they even offered me a scholarship and everything. There is this possibility. Let’s see if it really happens”, revealed Popó.
Although he stressed that the conversations are still at an early stage, Popó was excited about the possibility of facing an MMA “phenomenon”.
“(St-Pierre) was a phenomenon in his sport, at 77kg. We know he's not a guy who fought at 80, 90 kg. It was just an assumption, it's not real yet. Let's see if it will happen. If it happens, it will be good for the sport”, he concluded.
