Douglas lima, a Bellator welterweight fighter, did not expect the organization to give up having Ben Askren on its fighter roster.

The North American, dominant champion in the category, announced in mid-November that he would leave the event and try to join the UFC, leaving his belt vacant.

Lima, who was defeated by Askren in 2012 for the welterweight title, stated, in an interview with the North American website MMA Fighting, that he was taken by surprise by the news of his rival's departure. “I was a little surprised because he was the undefeated champion and a really tough fighter,” said the Brazilian, who, however, understands the possible reasons for the decision. “But he didn't sell his fights because of his style and I think that's important for the promotion. I believe that’s why Bellator hasn’t fought so much for him.”

With the belt vacant, Bellator will promote the fight between Lima and Rick Hawn to define the new welterweight champion. The Brazilian stated that he doesn't feel bothered by the fact that he won't be able to defeat Askren, as his main goal is the title.

“For me, it doesn't matter if he's in Bellator or not. Either way, I will fight for the title. That's my goal. Whoever it is with, I'll be ready. It's not my fault he's not with Bellator anymore. I just want a chance to fight for the title”, he explained. “I missed my first chance and that made me even hungrier. I will not stop. I have a mission and I will fulfill it. It’s a dream for me.”
