Number four in light heavyweight, Ankalaev 'forgets' belt and reveals focus on defeating Anthony Smith at UFC 277

Member of the top-5 in the light heavyweight division, Magomed Ankalayev He knows he's very close to reaching his first UFC belt fight, but he prefers to take it easy and not rush his journey. On media day UFC 277, which takes place next Saturday (30), the Russian fighter praised the North American Anthony Smith, his rival in the event and stated that his focus, now, is only on defeating him.

"He (Anthony Smith) you can think about what you want. But I know I do my job, I make sure I show to do my job, and we're just moving up. So there we go. He is a very good fighter, he has a lot of experience in this sport. I definitely didn't underestimate him, but I'm ready to go, and I think this is a challenge that I'll be able to solve and keep moving forward,” said Ankalaev.

Speculated as the next light heavyweight challenger, in case of victory, Ankalaev said he prefers not to think about it now and stated that his focus is only on defeating Anthony Smith.

“Right now, I’m just focused on this fight. I will fight against Anthony Smith. I want to make sure I get through this fight first and then, when I win, we can think about what comes next,” said the Russian.

Number four in the division ranking led by Jiri Prochazka, Magomed is going through a great moment and has been enjoying eight consecutive victories in the organization. His last defeat came in March 2018, when he was submitted by the Scotsman Paul Craig. The Russian fighter has a record of 17 wins and just one loss as a professional.
