One of the most controversial topics in Mixed Martial Arts, Testosterone Replacement Treatment, is once again in vogue during UFC Fight Night 32, which takes place this Saturday (9) in Goiânia (GO). This is because the protagonists of the main fight of the night, Vitor belfort e Dan Henderson, are supporters of the treatment and were authorized to use it at the event.
Both athletes have a history with TRT, having used the method in other fights previously. This Saturday, however, Hendo and Belfort were the only athletes to obtain approval from the Brazilian MMA Athletic Commission (CABMMA) for hormone replacement therapy.
TRT is a testosterone hormone replacement treatment, generally prescribed for fighters over 35 years of age (who, due to their age, have low hormone production) or diagnosed with hypogonadism. Thus, they can reach the hormonal concentration permitted by current regulations, something that would not be possible through natural means.
The process is not accepted by all MMA athletic commissions, and is also prohibited in other sports. In the case of combat sports, regulated use is permitted due to the damage to the athlete caused by low hormonal concentration – such as loss of physical capacity, fatigue, sleep problems and even depression. When an athlete is authorized to use TRT, they undergo regular examinations in order to assess whether there is no excessive hormonal gain during the treatment – which is considered doping.
