With two victories in two fights against Robert whittaker, Israel adesanya made it clear that he has no interest in a trilogy against the New Zealander. “Whittaker is a great fighter, I’ll give him that. He's a great fighter, but I know how this book ends. I've read this book twice. The first time was a quick read, the second a little longer. He'll probably be on top for a while, but if we fight again, I know how this book ends. That's why I'm excited about this next fight. Some new blood, someone I've never fought before. If Whittaker wants to, he should move up to light heavyweight, see what it's all about. Maybe, try this a little. But yes, I have read that book and yes, I don’t like reading the same book several times”, said the middleweight champion.

The first duel between Adesanya and Whittaker took place in October 2019. At the time, the Nigerian was the interim champion and with a knockout victory in the second round, he dethroned the then linear leader. The rematch between the two athletes took place in February 2022 and the 'Stylebender' emerged victorious again, this time, with a unanimous decision from the judges.
