With two victories in two fights against Robert whittaker, Israel adesanya made it clear that he has no interest in a trilogy against the New Zealander. In a press conference held by Ultimate to publicize the UFC 276, the middleweight champion (up to 83,9kg) praised the former owner of the belt but highlighted that he does not welcome the possibility of a new duel.

The first duel between Adesanya and Whittaker took place in October 2019. At the time, the Nigerian was the interim champion and with a knockout victory in the second round, he dethroned the then linear leader. The rematch between the two athletes took place in February 2022 and the 'Stylebender' emerged victorious again, this time, with a unanimous decision from the judges.
